We have some church chairs that are on an aluminum frame with a cloth wrapped particle board type base and back material.

As the chairs break, I have been replacing the base wood with plywood.

The backs however have been a problem. The screws end up stripping out of the wood and end up falling off. Unfortunately, the swapout of wood is not as simple since the cushion is completely wrapped in fabric.

I was wondering if there is a fastener out there that has come type of rivet that would run completely through the cushion, through to the back to fasten on to the metal support beam. The fastener would need to have a faux button cover that snaps over the top of the front side of the fastener hiding the screw or rivet.

Do you know of anything that might work with this situation?

I'm not sure what you need re; the backs. Are they bolted/screwed on with a screw through the metal post, through the fabric and into the wood? If  so the easiest solution to the problem are "T Nuts". Those are threaded fasteners with prongs around a "skirt". You drill a hole through the wood and tap the T Nut into the inside, under the foam pad. Put the cover on and mark the hole location. Poke a hold through fabric into the T Nut thread and attach the back with threaded screws/bolts. If the back isn't attached through the back support posts then I guess I'm not sure how it's attached.

If the screws are through the side of the back posts and into the laminated wood I don't have an answer, other than some threaded "L" brackets that are attached to the back with the short leg of the L on the side.

Good luck
